Grangebellew Volunteers

Old Drogheda Society

Annagassan Historical Society’s next illustrated lecture is at 8pm tomorrow, Wednesday 13th April in St. Finian’s National School, Dillonstown

After a frustrating march to Slane in bad weather and MacNeill’s countermanding order, eleven of the Grangebellew Volunteers occupied the Bellew Memorial Tower from Easter Monday 1916 to the following Sunday April 30th

Subsequently, six of the volunteers were arrested and imprisoned in Frongoch in Wales.  One, Michael Reynolds, was court-martialled and imprisoned in Lewes in East Sussex.  Bryan Rogers talk will cover these events, the volunteers formation, events leading up to the Rising and a Togher lady’s eye-witness account of the outbreak of fighting in Dublin.  Places are limited so please come early.

Entrance fee is €5 and includes tea/coffee afterwards.
