Drogheda Journal Digitised & Online

Old Drogheda Society

The Drogheda Journal, a local newspaper which flourished in the first half of the 1800s has been added to the digitised online collection of The British Newspaper Archive which is an online service provided by the British Library.

So far they have digitised 4,400 pages of this paper, covering 1812-1836 and 1838-1840. Drogheda Municipal Library holds a microfilm copy of this paper, covering the years 1824-1842, but the advantage of the online digitised version is that it is word-searchable, whereas with the microfilm you have to search through the entire paper to find what you want.

The online service is subscription based – you can search for an item for free but you must pay a fee to access it. Members of the Old Drogheda Society can search this huge online archive (and many others) for free in the archive room of Drogheda Museum Millmount – by appointment  … ring 014 9833097.

Membership of the Old Drogheda Society is only €15 Per year.

The Drogheda Journal was Unionist in its politics and later morphed into The Drogheda Advertiser. In all, 17 Irish newspapers have just been added to The British Newspaper Archive site here in addition to the many major Irish titles already there.

Thanks to historian and author Ian Kenneally (the biographer of John Boyle O’Reilly) for drawing our attention to this useful addition.
