History in Modern Ireland/Northern Ireland

on

Saturday 13th September, 2014

at St Columban's College, Dalgan Park, Navan, Co. Meath

from 9.30-1.30pm

 

  • What is the role of history in modern Irish/NI society, particularly in this decade of centenaries?

 

  • Does history inform us of our past and assist us in charting our future decisions?

 

  • How many of us truly understand the events leading up to World War One and the 1916 Rising?

 

  • What place does history have in the Irish/NI education system?

 
These are some of the questions to be discussed at the forthcoming seminar “History in Modern Ireland” organised jointly by the Meath Archaeological and Historical Society and the Meath Peace Group.  Speakers will include: Professor Marian Lyons (Head of History Dept, NUI Maynooth), Damien English TD (Minister of State, Dept of Education), Professor Fionnuala Waldron (Dean of Education, St Patrick's College Drumcondra), Niamh Crowley (Vice-President, History Teachers Association of Ireland) and Gordon Lucy (NI historian).
 

The seminar will take place on Saturday 13th September in St Columban's College, Dalgan Park, Navan, Co. Meath, and will run from 9.30am to 1.30pm, concluding with a light lunch.

 

All welcome. Admission 5 euro (includes light lunch).
